What is Halleck Creek Ranch?

For over 30 years Halleck Creek Ranch has helped people with special needs live a life without barriers through therapeutic horseback riding. Therapeutic horseback riding is a valuable form of physical and mental therapy, as well as an effective way for people with disabilities to access rugged terrain. The program uses the powerful therapeutic benefits available through horseback riding in nature to create a better quality of life for children and adults with disabilities, and for the people who care for them.

Where is Halleck Creek Ranch located?

HCR is located in the beautiful Nicasio Valley in Marin County, CA. Halleck Creek Ranch is located about 30 minutes from San Rafael, and about 45 minutes from Mill Valley.

Who operates Halleck Creek Ranch?

HCR is staffed by a small handful of full and part-time individuals, and supported by a Board of Directors. HCR staff pair gentle horses with dedicated volunteers, creating a dynamic team that carries our special riders into the beautiful Nicasio countryside.

What disabilities do they serve and what age range?

The riders have a wide range of developmental, physical, and sensory disabilities including: autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, vision/auditory impairments, and more. The youngest rider is 3, and the oldest rider is 65-years old, but 80% of our riders are children between the ages of 3- and 21-years old.

What programs does HCR offer and on what days/times?

Weekdays: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday riding happens in 50 and 30-minute time slots ranging from 12:30-4:00pm. During the week we offer group and individual riding sessions that focus on tasks designed to enable the rider to achieve measurable goals at the end of each 9 week session.

Saturdays: Saturday rides are 90-minutes long, and are group oriented, and emphasize the social connections between riders and volunteers, and the therapeutic connections between people, animals, and nature. There are three sessions every Saturday at 9 am, 11 am, and 1:30 pm.

What is the cost to participate at HCR? Are there scholarships available?

Riders sign up for 9-week sessions at a time. The tuition for a session (9 weeks of riding) of Saturdays is $400. The tuition for a session (9 weeks of riding) of a weekday is $225 for 30-minute time slots, and $400 for 50-minute time slots. HCR offers scholarships to support riders who come from low-income families, ensuring that Halleck Creek Ranch can break the financial barriers to participation in the therapeutic riding program, and continue to serve a diverse community of riders. An application process is required to obtain a scholarship.
