“I feel better every time I even think that such a place as Halleck Creek Ranch exists. It's a good feeling that is with me and sustains me, even when I'm not at the ranch. It's an honor to have even the tiniest involvement with the place and its wonderful works.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What do volunteers do?

There are two main jobs for volunteers: assisting at the therapeutic riding program, and helping out with ranch projects. Volunteers who assist at the riding program groom horses and lead horses for the disabled riders. Volunteers who participate in ranch maintenance projects help with a multitude of maintenance and clean up duties.

What is the time commitment required to volunteer?

While we appreciate volunteers coming as often as they are able, there is a minimum number of 60 hours within the first six months required of volunteers to participate at Halleck Creek. Volunteers may come for one, two, or three sessions on a Saturday. While we need help at all three sessions, the last session is currently our area of greatest need. The 60 hour/6 months commitment is equal to approx. one full Saturday (8:00am-3:00pm) each month, however, volunteers are not required to volunteer for an entire Saturday at a time. Again, volunteers can set and sign up for their own hours, so long as they add up to the minimum after the first six months.

Do volunteers need horse experience, or are they trained?

Whether you have previous experience with horses or not, you can be a successful volunteer. Halleck Creek has created a comprehensive weekly training program utilizing more experienced volunteers to train newer volunteers on all aspects of the horses and program.

Is there a minimum age to volunteer?

In accordance with the 4H requirements, volunteers at the therapeutic riding program must be at least 12 years old. Ranch maintenance projects do not have a minimum age to participate.

What are the days and times for volunteering?

Saturday volunteers hours are from 8:00am to 3:00pm. On Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesdays we need volunteers from 12:30pm to 4:30pm. Volunteers who wish to groom and tack up horses need to arrive at 8am on Saturdays and 10:00am on weekdays.

How do volunteers sign up?

Please contact Molly Scannell, Program Manager, at 415-662-2488 or via email at mscannell@halleckcreekranch.org for more information.

There are forms that need to be filled out, and any volunteer over the age of 18 must have their fingerprints cleared before attending the program.
